Towards predicting biochar impacts on plant-available soil nitrogen content

چکیده

Abstract Biochars can improve soil health but have been widely shown to reduce plant-available nitrogen (N) owing their high carbon (C) content, which stimulates microbial N-immobilization. However, because biochars contain large amounts of C that are not microbially available, total elemental C:N ratio does correspond well with impacts on N. We hypothesized N would relate biochar mineralizable-C (C min ) and ratios the mineralizable component could provide a means for predicting conditions net N-mineralization or -immobilization. conducted two laboratory experiments, first measuring from respiration isotopically labeled barley manufactured at 300, 500, 750 °C, second characterizing by proxy measurements ten six feedstocks several temperatures. For both soils were incubated 2% mass determine N-mineralization. Contrary expectation, all increased relative unamended soils. Also unexpected, higher temperature (500 700 °C) less stimulated more decomposition than 350 °C biochar. across diverse production methods, none characteristics correlated The finding improved adds complexity range responses be expected in response amendment. Because limited ability predict properties, users should monitor manage fertility.

Effect of biochar on nitrogen retention in soil under corn plant inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

Maintaining the levels of nitrogen in agricultural fields to ensure crop yield performance is challenging due to the complex dynamics of nitrogen transformation in soil. Nitrogen is mainly taken up by plant roots in the form of nitrate, but it is considered as an environmental pollutant that threatens human and animal health. Therefore, it is necessary to use adsorbent compounds to retain nitra...

Biochar Impacts on Soil Physical Properties and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Biochar, a co-product of a controlled pyrolysis process, can be used as a tool for sequestering C in soil to offset greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and as a soil amendment. Whereas the impacts of biochar application on soil chemical properties are widely known, the research information on soil physical properties is scarce. The objectives of this review are to (i) synthesize available data on s...

A Review of Biochar and Soil Nitrogen Dynamics

Interest in biochar stems from its potential agronomic benefits and carbon sequestration ability. Biochar application alters soil nitrogen (N) dynamics. This review establishes emerging trends and gaps in biochar-N research. Biochar adsorption of NO3, up to 0.6 mg g biochar, occurs at pyrolysis temperatures >600 °C with amounts adsorbed dependent on feedstock and NO3 concentration. Biochar NH4 ...
